In my opinion, having owned both the 900 and the 300, the answer is definitely no. While I think the 900 is better than the 600 (basing this off the 600 I used in Best Buy), its definitely not as clear as the 300. I owned the 300, bought the 900, and returned the 300 2 weeks ago. I thought I could get used to needing a book light at ALL times with the 900, but in the end, I couldn't. So I am sending the 900 back to Sony, and I repurchased the 300 a couple of days ago.

Now, with a nice book light, the 900 is just as readable as a 300 (again, to me). In normal light I needed the book light to counteract the glare, and in darker rooms I needed the light to read. A book cover with built-in light might have made a difference for me, as I got tired of carrying around the 900 and a light. I really liked the 900 a lot, so it pains me to return it.
