Personally, I do
notice the variations in the English and American versions, but I'm one of those (probably minority) on this side of the pond who just isn't bothered by it. But then again, when you read enough SciFi, and enough Victorian literature, you get used to seeing terms that you don't encounter in "real" life, so that probably contributes to my ability to figure out what 'trainers' are, for instance, just as many British folks would have no trouble figuring out what sneakers are.
