I don't think it is obsolete. What we are seeing is more "full featured" devices, which are more expensive (and perhaps more profitable). There is always going to be room at the bottom for no frills, side-load and read, devices and at present they are best represented by the 5" screen. By the way I don't mean "bottom" in a pejorative sense, the current crop of 5" readers have mature software stacks and work very well at doing exactly one thing.

In the US we are seeing Sony and (in particular) B&N setting them selves up as hubs for OTA (over the air) delivery of ebooks. So there is a question whether a "basic" reader will eventually come to include 3G or WiFi. The RCA Lexi is going to have two models with and without WiFi for example.
