I purchased a zipped file of over 3000 books from
http://www.mobilereference.com/
After unzipping all the author files. I loaded them onto the Kindle 2. Right now, there are about 3300 books available on the Kindle 2 and I still have 642Meg of memory available. I am currently reading the L Frank Baum selection.

I deleted 250 or so titles and it resumed downloading periodical updates and began indexing again. I'm now at 1445 books.
It used to take about 15 seconds to index a new book when I first added them; now it takes 1-2 minutes.
