I'm also not a fan of swiping, but I wouldn't mind being able to touch a corner of the screen to change the page, or even to activate the options menu. If the screen were logically divided into 4 sections, then the two sections on the "bottom" (as determined by the internal sensor) could be used for back/forward, while the two sections on the "top" could be used for menu/user-defined. Of course, the user should be able to assign an action to all 4 "logical buttons", not just one.
