The Ricavision eReader is apparently similar to this, using Windows (Vista) SideShow, see More E Ink: Ricavision eReader for Vista is introduced. The Ricavision thread was the first time I had ever heard of windows sideshow, but maybe it is a viable approach. For Linux, you would probably just setup the device as a dumb X11 terminal - but that still might require more customization (on the server) than a sideshow device.
