The funny thing for me was that I have never turned off my Pre since purchasing it. There have been times when it has automatically rebooted after an update, but I haven't turned it off. Consequently, I couldn't remember how to do it.
On the flight to Vegas, I left it in Airplane Mode and then figured it out once we landed. It just took holding the button down longer than I had previously tried in the heat of the moment.
