No, this is not an option by default. You'd have to have PDF995 installed for that to work (which I recall being a very obnoxious program)..

Users with Adobe Acrobat installed would choose "Acrobat Distiller" instead.

However, with Word 2007+ there should be an option to export to PDF that does not use a virtual printer at all.

Same goes for (even older) versions of Open Office.
