People need to stop recommending windows 2000! It is NOT faster than XP in terms of processor usage. In fact, the XP kernel probably has more optimizations. In terms of memory, win2k uses less only by default. Disable xp themes and a bunch of services, and there won't be a real difference in memory either.
Meanwhile, win2k has tons of rough corners and dumb things that were fixed in xp. A lot of newer device functionality (such as connecting to networks and especially wifi!) is also much better. Not to mention driver support.
People HAVE GOT to stop perpetuating this ignorant myth. People who use win2k need to be shot, as do people who run win2k3 on their desktops.
Second, I seriously doubt Ubuntu running firefox will be any faster or use less memore than windows xp doing the same thing. Linux isn't automatically and magically leaner, meaner, or better than windows! You need a special distribution that desn't use KDE/Gnome, runs an alternate browser like Dillo, and has other tweaks to actually get something that's fast.
Third, everyone should check out nLite. It lets you create Windows distributions with many components removed and lets you integrate all sorts of tweaks, apps, drivers, updates into the installation cd itself.
nLited windows xp can use 40 MB of ram and half a gig of disk space. That's definatley what I'd be putting on this thing.
