Agreed. Try to parse the document, if it encounters errors then try to correct, if that fails then render the content you can and/or show an error of some kind. Basic exception handling.
I know Eowyn doesn't like me saying this but this firmware release is poor quality and given the number and range of bugs there is no way this was tested properly.
On the plus side, I did actually get a response from Bookeen for my bug report on 28-12-2009:

The reply was received on the 5th January which given the time of year is not bad at all. They need to respond publicly though. Let us know they are aware of the issues (listing them so we can be sure they have them all) and provide some indication of what they intend to do and when. Without using the word "soon" or "Monday"...
Hopefully in the coming week we will start to see some feedback.
