Cat - pondering about step seven...
There's a B. Kliban cartoon of a guy sitting in a chair, festooned in cats. He's telling his friend "I got a cat. It was okay. I liked it. So I got another, and another, and another..."

My maximum has been three, with none at the moment. I once shared a house where there were eight cats and a dog (because one of my housemates rescued feral cats). her husband commented "At any time, I can clap my hands and yell, and at least four cats will suddenly stop doing something they knew they shouldn't be doing..."
