Just a quick note regarding backlit devices: screen technology does play a factor in their outdoor usability. Right now, I use my smartphone for reading - it's a Samsung Omnia II, which has an AMOLED screen. Indoors, I can turn off the backlight, and it still provides enough light to read in the dark. Outdoors, I can turn the backlight on, and it is 100% usable, even in bright sunlight. (Having said that, I hate reading on it over long periods of time, and hope to have a Sony Reader within the next few days)
