I'd let the thing charge until the charge light above the power slider goes out.
Installing the ConnSoft is pretty straightforward as long as you aren't using the 64 bit incarnation of Vista.

The problem with any 64-bit Windows is you won't be able to use Connect to talk to the Reader nor will you be able to register your Reader to get the credit not download any books from the Connect site. So if you do run a 64-bit Windows, you'll have to find another machine just for Connect or get a 32-bit copy and dual-boot.
