epub > RTF smashes words together

When using Calibre to convert epub to RTF, about a dozen pairs of words per page of the RTF are run together, e.g. "he was" becomes "hewas".

If I convert epub>lrf>RTF, I can get around the problem (at least this time), but that seems to be asking for other troubles in the long run.

Is there a setting to avoid this? Or is this a known issue?
