You can also go to a Borders to have a look at the Sony Reader and see if that is any better. But seriously, the screen is not meant to be harsh. That is why the contrast is not a much as your palm. Once you really get into reading with the Sony, and then go back to the palm, you will find the palm kind of harsh.
