Welcome to MobileRead Rocketime. Glad to have you here.

If your Fry's is like the one I visited in Fountain Valley, CA I am surprised that you could see the Reader at all. You almost needed a lamp on your head to see the products.

Your reaction is not wrong. In dim light the screen is hard to read -- even when you enlarge the font. Have you been spoiled by the backlight of your Palm, yes but only in the brightness of the screen. When you have a good light source the Sony Reader provides a superior reading experience to every Palm I have ever seen. You will never be able to use the Sony to read at a concert (as a friend of mine does on his Palm.)

As the quality of the light increases the contrast of the screen also increases. There are several clip-on lights that people have used that will allow you to read in almost any situation. I find the overhead light in an airplane perfect for reading the Sony. At home I read in the same chair using the same lamp that I do for normal books. The Reader will also perform wonderfully in bright sun, something I have never been able to do with any backlit screen device.

I suggest that you try to find one in a place with reasonable lighting where you can properly evaluate it. I suspect that the Fry's you visited was not the best place to show off the Reader's capabilities.
