True to some extent (this is exactly what is happening to MS and others), but doesn't that amount to a "dumbing down" the product to the lowest common nominator and hurts those that need the extra functions and can handle it?
But of course there are other reasons, Apple skimped on program memory and has no exchangeable battery. Avoiding background operation does mitigate those flaws somewhat. Most important, however, are economic reasons. They want to make sure that all the apps go through the app store.
