For some reason, this seems to be a reoccurring problem. Here's what I do when it happens to mine:

Turn the wireless ON.

Turn OFF the Kindle (depress the power button until the screen is completely blank).

Wait a few seconds and turn the Kindle back ON. Now when you open and close a book (assuming you have chosen the "Last book read" from the display options), it should be back where it belongs at the head of the first page selections.

You can then turn the wireless back off, if you desire.
