I usually say that stripping DRM is probably legal in the US, because format shifting is generally considered a fair use but the DMCA does say that removing DRM is not allowed in most circumstances. As a practical matter, this issue is never going to be resolved because no one is going to be sued over stripping DRM from an ebook they paid money for when their only purpose is personal use.
