Thanks , glad ya got a kick outta the shots. I agree it's a fun hobby and actually cheaper than golf for sure!! And since I can't play golf anymore I can enjoy hikes with a camera.
Your 500D is a really nice body for sure!! And remember it's the person behind the lens that does the work. I have seen folks put my "best" shots to shame with an old broke 10D and a nifty-fifty...I "hate" those guys...hehehehe...
What else ya got glass wise? BTW, if you are not aware of POTN (
http://photography-on-the.net) you are really missing some GREAT folks as well as some of the best photography talk online. I still hang out there as well as at PentaxForums.com. The fun part of POTN is there are several members in my area and we have a big get together every summer at one of the member's home in Buellton. it's a really fun time. I missed it this past summer because, I was just not up for it and would likely not have been much fun. And I can say that every member I met from there in real life has been super to hang out with on a photo day or just in general.
Anyway, I just switched from a Canon 40D to Pentax. I decided to switch for the wonderful prime "Limiteds". I actually was switching for the new K7 but decided to do it before the K7 came out and ended up with a K20D and the "three amigos" which are the silver body limited edition FA 31/1.8, FA 43/1.9, FA 77/1.8 as well as the DA 35/2.8 Macro and a DA* 55-135mm which is weather sealed as are the K20D and K7 bodies. In fact the K7 is rated down to -10°C and has an MgAlloy body AND stainless frame to go with the sealing. Most important to me is the AF as well as Liveview on the K7 is on par with that of the xxxD family from Canon, though the new 7D is an awesome looking thing!! But I honestly have a hard time justifying a $900 body let alone a $1700 7D, still the dual senors and weather sealing are NIIIICE. But then I have glass that easily rivals any L-glass Canon has to offer, well as far as primes go...Pentax has a long way to go on their version of USM called SDM. So far on two of the DA* (all SDM glass) and a few of the DA lenses are SDM AF, but on the SDM several of the lenses have something odd in the design which makes the prone to failure...at about month 13...yeah, you got it, a 1-yr US warranty...d'oh!! My 50-135 died a crib death in the first month so I just returned it for refund and instead bought the 31ltd. Basically I am all primes now...and I am loving it because I don't have the luxury of a high end zoom right now and unless I want to change the lense I need to look for the shots using the lense I have mounted. In fact some days i just go out with one lense. And the best part of the limited primes? All of them together weigh less that the 70-200/4L and take up less room in my bag...kinda fun that part is for sure!!
I will say that when I got my 40D it had come down to the K20D vs. the 40D and canon won because of the Liveview being night and day better. On the K20D the Liveview is, to be kind, just awful and still is..plus it is a feature I rely on a great deal. Still the thing in favor of the K20D was in body stabilization...in the end the Canon won out. But I got tired of of having to fork out over a grand for each new lense I wanted for Canon even w/o stabilization if I wanted anything faster than 2.8 glass. So, I sold off all the Canon gear and decided to go back to my photography roots in Pentax and bought the K20D when it bottomed out retail price wise, just $620 at Amazon. I figured it was a good deal for a weather sealed body with really nice IQ and decent noise up to about ISO800 though if you embrace the noise in favor of the increased detail over the kinda smudged out NR from Canon, the actual detail of the Pentax is fine up to 3200 and prints great at 1600 as well. Still there is more noise than the 40D at those speeds just more detail.
I'll grab a K7 when the price drops below the $900 and prolly sell the K20D for no less than $50ish less than I paid for it. In the mean time rather than buy the $1300 new K7 I used the $600 I saved and added to the lense kitty to some great fast glass. Plus the Pentax gives ya access to 40+ years of Pentax k-mount/M42-mount glass without needing a special adapter save for the M42 mount copies.
The Pentax system has a lot of short comings like really mediocre flash subsystem and a horrible supposedly "pro" flash lineup. Almost must go to Metz for decent flashes so I opted for some cheap brand-x flashes from Youngno in China that will do for now and they are nice manual flashes good enough for studio product shots. I sold my 430EX II like an idiot because I never actually used it as other than a remote off camera flash anyway...d'oh!!
Once I do get the K7, I will have everything the 40D gave me plus in-body stabilization as well as weather sealing in a nice smaller body like your 500D. It will also do video like yours but I am not much into that, still it will sure be fun to fiddle with now and then.
We should open a photography thread in whatever the general topics section is here on MR before I get us in trouble!!
