One approach is to download the sample first and unswindle should tell you if it is TOPAZ (or look for TPZ0 as the 1st 4 bytes of the file). A good "tell" is that TOPAZ ebooks don't include their filesize on their Kindle Store web page.
There has been progress on removing the DRM from TOPAZ, but the TOPAZ format is essentially a reflowable scan of the printed page. So far it isn't convertible to any standard ebook format.
A DRM-free AZW is a MOBI (I suggest using .mobi as its filename extension), and it can be converted to ePub or LRF for a Sony using Calibre.
