If people feel every safety precaution has been taken, they are more likely to travel by air. It may sound cynical, but air travel is a business and a business exists to make a profit. If I were running a business, I would take whatever measures necessary to ensure my business is secure and successful. I think people that fly a lot know that the security precaution mostly are just for show. The airline companies loose customers because of them. And it is not the airline companies that decide what security things to implement.
