BACK FEATURE
A quick note on the back feature. It looks like Jinke tried to implement the back feature work around that I specified in an earlier email but they did it wrong.
In ePUB if you select goto page the information on the bottom is prefilled with a number. Unfortunately that number is always the current page you are on. This is not what I suggested.
What I suggested was that when a link was followed inside a book the source page be remembered and if the user select goto page then that remembered page would be pre-filled in so that the user to just hit ok to return to the page they were on prior to following the link, A quick back function.
I also said the number should be in reverse (white on black) and if the user tapped any number key it should replace that prefilled in number.
Note this is really not a full solution in that it only does one level of "back" but it is better than nothing. (Of course the tool could remember other page numbers and supply them when appropriate.)
Likely a better solution is to devote a key to this function such as the 9 key which would be redefined like the 0 key is when a follow link is being used. This could work on both the V5 and V3.
THUMBWHEEL FEATURE
Another good function suggested by users is that of permitting a dynamic redefinning of the thumbwheel function.
1. When the user depresses the thumb wheel 3 choices would appear on the screen. (optionally only choice 2, 3, and 4 could appear if Jinke does not want to implement the use of the thumbwheel to operate the main menu.) The choice order could also be different.
1. main menu
2. page next/prev
3. link next/prev
4. Volume up/down
The current setting would be highlighted in the above list. If the user selected the up or down on the thumbwheel the hightlighted selection in the above list would change, either up or down as appropriate. If the user depressed the thumbwheel again the highlighted selection would be kept and remembered for future use of the up/down thumbwheel function.
This permits the current next/prev function, a replacement link next/prev function instead of the 9/0 keys above or allows adjustment of the volume control which is currently awkward for TTS and music.
MAIN MENU implementation using the thumbwheel.
Pushing the button down could also bring up the main menu if choice 1 is selected.
If the function to bring up the main menu is selected the main menu should appear as it does today and while it is one the screen the thumbwheel up/down functions should highlight entries on the main menu. And if one of those is highlighted and the user depresses the thumbwheel then that selection should be activated and the thumbwheel default choice should revert to nex/prev page. This feature permits almost total control from the thumbwheel as a alternate UI.
