I'm not aware of any hacks to speed up TTS. I would suggest you contact Amazon and express your needs. They've been in press recently regarding their plans to make the Kindle more usable for the visually impaired. This is probably the best time to give them your two cents. Maybe ask them if you can be a beta tester.
