I can disable smilies in my own postings (a Miscellaneous Option below the Submit Reply button and they will show as seen above), but that's not what you're looking for.

You have the ability to hide smilies in the MobileRead mobile site but I can find no way through the User CP to hide smiles on the .com site.

If you have something like Adblock Plus: add-on for Firefox, you may be able to ignore images from the MobileRead smilies image file:

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/images/smilies/

You could possibly make a request to Alex to have the option within the User CP to suppress smilies, it sounds like a reasonable request, but you may miss out an intended nuance of the message if say, the "wink" was suppressed.
