We may be a bit reactionary here in the US but I believe our feelings are fairly justified. Watching thousands of innocent people die from a terrorist attack involving our own aircraft has left us extremely cautious. The fact that the terrorist organizations have not given up and gone away and are, in fact, still intent on causing further death and destruction seems to me to be a good enough reason for additional security measures. (Although I still think the whole "shoe" thing is over the top, I bow to drofgnal's point about storing explosives in them ~ of course, I don't think they'd get very much C4 in a Jimmy Choo shoe.
