There is a Book Off in Paris?? Wow.
My favourite writer now is Kyougoku Natsuhiko京極夏彥. He is famous for the unique 妖怪mystery stories - the "monster" is in people's heart. His writing is quite pedantic. I'm not good at history, though. Some of the historical background is difficult for me to understand. But I like the scientific and philosophical part. Better to start with the 京極堂 series(姑獲鳥の夏、魍魎の匣 and so on)
I also kinda like 宮部美幸, although she is quite longwinded. She wrote a lot of novels and I didn't read all of them. I'd recommend her most famous award-winning 火車 and 理由, though 誰か is my favourite(as it was the first one I read and it's easier to read)
