I like to look at the status bar periodically to get an idea for where I am in the book - ie how much more I have to read. But otherwise I like to press a button and have it hidden away so I can focus just on the text itself.
In case anyone else wants to know, hiding the status bar can be done via:
Menu | Settings | Key Mapping | Appearance | Hide Panel
Assign this to a button and when in FBReader use it to show/hide the status bar at will.

I am so impressed with the FBReader I must say, it really works great.
But what I like the most is that 1. I can bookmark my books with one click (I used the keymap function to allocate the bookmarking to one key) 2. I can keymap any button 3. I have epub as well as prc files, and it is just so comfortable to be able to read both on the same reader without any problem. Speaking of which, I opened a DJVu file with the pb yesterday, and it displayed it perfectly. I am just soooooo impressed !!!
