Have you set your location in the Reader Library correctly? It sounds as if it's set to US instead of UK. To change it open the Reader Library software then click 'edit' in the menu and choose 'Preferences' and there you can set your region.
For transferring free books you've downloaded from here or other sites you can use Calibre, a forum for this program can be found on this site.
