Thanks for the thought but did that... and reformatted at a later attempt.

Edit: Solved it... always the silly things that get you... I put flasher-igorsk on the SD card as the entire folder... when I put the contents of the folder in the root instead it worked fine except that by then I'd upset the reader a bit and it got into a restart/firmware didn't update loop but easily solved by reflashing with Sony's updater. PRSPlus flash then worked perfectly... great, now preparing first test card of books by folder with .noscan
