Try it several times at different boot phases.
If it doesn't work, do the 10+ reboots way. Have in mind, that you have to reset it each time RIGHT after startup screen shows up. The mechanism behind "10+" reboots is, that device cannot startup. Since you get quite far with it (drives are mounted) it's important, that you don't let the system start up and report "ok" internally, before resetting.
