The past is a deep mine:
For sf, IMO:
Best sci-fi novel of all time: Zelazny, Roger, "Lord of Light"
Best fantasy novel of all time: Stewart, Sean, "Clouds End"
Best medium length work OAT: Moore, C.L., "No Woman Born"
Best short work OAT: Sturgeon, Theodore, "Slow Sculpture"
"Clouds End" is the newest, and "No Woman Born" the oldest.

Since the thread title limits the past to books read in 2009. The past isn't that deep of a mine. So you read these books in 2009? I mean we wouldn't want to veer off track, would we?
My favorite reads of 2009 are:
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold - A touching look at one girl's view of her family and life after she dies.
The Hollows Series by Kim Harrison - A thoroughly enjoyable slapstick paranormal urban fantasy series.
Rendezvous With Rama by Arthur C. Clarke - A classic hard science fiction story about exploration and discovery.
Other enjoyable reads for 2009:
Ringworld Series by Larry Niven
Riley Jensen Series by Keri Arthur
The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein
Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah by Richard Bach
