I would think that this is a bit different. I'd have to doubt the sanity of an author pricing their book at $10,000! Also, it's an electronic copy, not a physical copy, so the author is not really
losing money, he's just not
making money. There's a distinct and important difference there that affects people's psychology whether or not they realize it.
When it was free, I'm sure most people are willing to download it because they don't have much to lose if they don't get to it or decide after a few pages that they don't like it. As for paying, many people on MR have a really long TBR list so they end up having to decide whether to buy it now and stick it in the queue, or put it on their wanted list and getting it later.
I absolutely would have downloaded it had I been able to get it for free. Now, I've put it in my library for later purchase. Even though it's a set your own price, I feel bad about not paying up front as I don't really know when I'll get to it as my TBR queue is just too long.
