Yes, but with MacPorts the dependencies only need to be installed and compiled once. Once they exist doing a port update calibre will only get the new calibre code and won't need to d/l update dependencies unless the are required.
Of course... calibre is updated very often so if someone does do a macport it might be an active job to keep it up to date. (I'm assuming every release of calibre will mean the port needs to be updated... but I'm not sure that is true never having authored a macport and only using them.)

PS: That all said... I have no problem with the current size. I have plenty of bandwidth and hard drive space. But, no everyone lives in the US with unlimited broadband Internet connections.
