Office Open XML, now an ISO standard because they basically bought the ISO process. See above ISO-bashing I did.
And no, you can take option 5 - open it in Open Office, which works fine for anything but massively complex excel spreadsheets, and for those the compatibility pack tends to fall over anyway*.
