We had a dog when I was a kid, it literally followed me home from school one day - honest!! We spent a week or so feeding it on the porch and caring for it, thinking it would go home.
The entire time we just called it dog, so when we made a permanent member of the family that was his name ... "Dog". Maybe your new addition is "Cat" or "Kitten"?
