I fixed her activation counts.
Had her reauthorize ADE, and make sure the books work correctly with the given AdobeID
Then had her authorize her reader
(some books showed as protected, but recopying from the computer fixed that).

The bookstores in questions were good enough to allow for redownloads

So it was a problem with multiple IDs. The usual case for this is an anonymous activation, and then authorizing to an AdobeID afterwards (and previously having used that AdobeID to authorize another computer), however since the latest version of the Sony EBL will now create an AdobeID to match your Sony ID, this has created new warning dialogs for people to ignore.
