First impressions
Starting out I made my first mistake. To get off the softcover, one is supposed to loosen the first 2 connectors and then slide down the cover and then pull out. I neglected to slide down enough and broke the connectors.
I called Sony support and they are sending me a new softcover UPS free of charge. It was hard communicating to the Indian technician. His knowledge of English was very limited. I had to spell out some of my words.
Then I could not get off the battery cover. The manual said to press down and slide left. It did not work. I had to use a small screw drive to ease it away from its connectors and then push to the left. I almost gave up there considering its return. I went to sleep and then figured it out.
Then, when exploring all the features, I used magnify on a PDF page and tried to go back to reading. It froze up stating, "protected page." I couldn't read anything. I had to reset using the tip of the enclosed stylus after unscrewing it. Nothing happened. Eventually, I pressed the power and it all worked fine.
If one uses he key to change fonts, one cannot turn pages after that. One must press Options and then Return to Page. That is not mentioned in the manual. I thought my unit was broken at first due to that problem.
When I registered the PRS 900 with the Sony store it went into gyrations. All my BBeB books caused it to malfunction. It only supports PDF and ePub books. I had to delete all of them and re-download the ePub versions. It was a harrowing experience with most books being duplicated. I had to delete all the BBeB files and the duplicate ePub viles.
Authorizing the PRS 900 with the Sony Store was also a bad experience. It wanted BOTH my Sony AND Adobe passwords and then recorded an "error." I disconnected and went back to find that all had been registered correctly.
There is no clear indication of how to de-authorize. I eventually found by trial and error that modifying the name also results in the de-authorize link. There is no clue showing that process.
One good thing is that the display screen of the PRS 900 beats the PRS 505 DRAMATICALLY. I have never seen such clear print. Plus my Zondervan NIV Bible can be manipulated far better than on the 505 with hot links to verses and chapters. The 505 did not recognize the chapter and verse hot links except to go backwards.
It also takes some getting used to the online keyboard.
Some recommendations are in order. Keep a small screwdriver around to ease off the battery cover. Delete all BBeB books before doing anything and re-download all the ePub versions. In removing the softcover, slide it down to the end before trying to remove it.
It took me about 6 hours to get to where I can now read my books again. I went to sleep after the battery cover hurdle and woke up with the solution.
I especially like the extra cushioned case they sent. No other eReaders have something like that. One must remove the soft cover to use it. I intend to use it all the time. However, one must remove the PRS 900 from that case to press the power button. I will probably leave it in that case most of the time. One can read great with it on and it would protect it in case you drop the unit.
Finally, to leave the Sony store, one must press the Home button. Nowhere in the manual is that stipulated. I leave the wireless connecton off most of the time to conserve power. My Wish List is not available via the wireless connection (at least I haven't found it yet). Thus, I will probably buy books the old fashioned way via my PC and then synchronize it.
