You've put your finger on the fly in the ointment. I see people reading in these coffee shops all the time. If they build these kiosks what's to stop Starbucks et al from putting in a bookshelf with about 100 first chapters and a link to purchase and download a book when you find one you like. This would create a lot of competition for local bookstores.
