The battery life the manufacturers list aren't realistic. That's what they get when they turn off the drive, put the cpu into the lowest power mode short of sleeping, and turn the screen brightness to just short of off and just let it sit until it dies. Doesn't even come close to what real life use is like
If you're reading, the drive (if it has one rather than flash) will spin down and the cpu slows down, but the screen still sucks power, and under bright light, you need to turn up the brightness, which uses even more. That's one reason the e-ink displays use so little power, they only need it on refresh.
If you want longer battery life, get a slower processor and slow it down even more, and read in the shade so you can lower the brightness. Of course, with all that, it will probably only give you an extra 30 minutes or so
