Im from the UK and you have to download and open an Adobe Digital Editions account and authorise your reader and computer with them. Once you have authorised them in ADE the Sony E Library should recognise your reader. Go to WH Smiths website and in the FAQs of the ebook section see the question about Adobe Epub Ebook then click on "the Basics" and that should explain the procedures
I must admit I had a lot of trouble with all this but I managed to authorise the computer easily enough but I had to use the old version of the Ebook library before I could authorise my reader.
My advice would be if you do manage to authorise them both before buying an expensive book try downloading a cheap book to check that it works
