I have a PDF of a book with lots of photos and maps that I want to convert to an ebook. I ran it through Calibre to Mobi and Epub and it looks better than other translators but it drops all of the characters "i"

Any suggestions on how to correct this or any free software that would let me look at the PDF source to see if there is a pattern?
