Compare it with an iPod with the same pair of headphones and the quality difference jumps traight in your face. The music add on to the reader makes it seem like the whole marketing idea behind the device is to use it while in a waiting period; be it train, car, plane or plain waiting room. Quality is not the utmost prerequisite, just the number of functions using supported Sony media. It's not real bad, there's just better.
