It's not the lack of wireless - that didn't stop the iPod. It's the fact that there's no equivalent yet of iTunes and the iTunes Store. That's what made buying/downloading music easy enough to move it into the mainstream. That and the fact the iPod worked so well that it was enough to entice many people to but into Apple's proprietary setup (Mac only, AAC and so on).
