This was my fault, Notepad has a bug which falsely interprets some files as in the UTF-16 format which ends up displaying as Chinese characters. So you need a "real" text editor after all - then the TPZ0 will show up in all files. I did test Notpad, but only on one TOPAZ ebook and it worked in that case.
I use
Cream, which adds an "Edit with" option to the right click menu. There probably are better options, but this one works.
