Those are two separate problems but it is somewhat ironic that they've introduced an even bigger problem than the one they're trying to fix.
The reason why backups take so slow for people with large libraries is because Stanza explodes every ebook into its component formats. Instead of just 1 ePUB file, you get a minimum of 5 files per ebook:
mimetype
container.xml
content.opf
toc.ncx
content.html
When you consider that a regular ebook contains a lot more files than those (stylesheets, images, usually one html per chapter, etc), well you get the idea.

The new layout doesn't allow for it. Still, it would be nice if Lexcycle could add an info or status page that would tell you how many books you have, how big your library is (in MB), how many books are still unread and you've finished reading, etc.
