Personally, I'd pay a pro to do it for me. A buck isn't a lot for this kind of service.

If you do this a lot, find a nice woodworker with a bandsaw in her basement and make up some kind of clamp. The actual sawing should take about 2 seconds per book. If the bandsaw has a vacuum attachment, so much the better. The finer the blade, the better. Second choice would be a miter box or chop saw.

For safety reasons, I strongly recommend against using an unguarded razor knife. If you must do that, get a mail glove at a woodcarver's shop.
