There are recent books that are not drm-ed, available for free or for a price, like from smashworks and other similar sites. However, these books are usually self-published ones. Not that there's anything wrong with that, you can find some really good reads at smashwords.
To summarize, anything without drm is available or can be readily converted to either kindle or sony. Public domain ebooks have no drm, self-published books and books by select few small publishing houses don't have drm.
For drm books (most commercial titles) you have to check availability. Some are both available in the amazon and the various epub stores, some are not. And some books don't come in ebook format at all.
