The fact that Sony offers even a 'for-fee' upgrade to the PRS-500 is really swaying me to buy one of the new eReaders (600 or 900) instead of a Kindle or Nook. It makes me think they will consider supporting their product deeper in its lifecycle than either of the other two are willing to do.
