Yes, Silent Running is great. Glad you and Sparrow like it too. An environmental sci-fi. Don't you just think the corduroy spacesuits are so 70's? I loved it when he came in carrying apples in his monk-like costume too...kind of hippy. The whole storyline is excellent though. He sure has passion for his garden and protecting it. So many precious little bits in the movie and Joan Baez's songs were great too.
All of my favourite sci-fi movies are from the 70's, it's when they actually had topics and ideas instead of just fights and monsters. Silent Running, Rollerball, Soylent Green, Planet of the Apes (okay it was late 60's), Logan's Run...all these films have solid ideas they explore. Moon is the first sci-fi film I've seen in years that also shares this approach. Hope it isn't the last
